One Easy Step to Help Your Clients This Tax Season

As everyone is starting to compile their needed documents for taxes, I've always found it to be a best practice to send the HUD-1 form to my previous year clients who bought or sold a home with me. By doing this, it saves them the time from digging through their paperwork to find it to help them complete their taxes. You can also send them a tax preparation checklist to help them out. You can find a copy here.

Trust me, your clients will thank you when they start filing their taxes because it is a much needed document and probably one they may have forgot about if they purchased or sold their home at the beginning of the previous year.

If your clients are first time home buyers, make sure they understand the tax breaks and deductions. Here is a great article by TurboTax that helps outline the information.

Ideally, you know the new address of the clients you sold their home for them, but if not, it's a great time to reach out to them and catch up with them. You never know, they may know someone who wants to buy or sell their home.

With that said, if you have the time, it's also a great idea to reach out to all of your clients to check in and see how everything is going. Staying top of mind is what helps them remember you so they can recommend you to their friends and family.

If you keep your files fairly organized, it should just be a matter of printing and mailing them. It only took me a few hours to get everything compiled and mailed out. My recommendation would be to just sit down and get it done. It's one of those activities that is easy to put off.

Does anyone else send their clients the HUD-1 form before taxes?
